Don't upgrade farms! Rebellious cities are the bane of your mid-late game campaign. Some things to keep in mind on the campaign map:ġ. Take advantage of the routs by using your cavalry to chase them down the length of the bridge - on a campaign map, using bridge battles in this manner is the best way to annihilate an enemy army. If the enemy has massed into your V formation, then a chain rout may occur. Allow the enemy to funnel into the V out of formation, a rout is almost certain.
When defending a bridge or a city, place units (preferably spear) in a V formation at the city gates, breaches in the wooden walls (the enemy will use battering rams to knock down portions of your wooden walls, but use ladders or towers to climb stone walls, which you'll want to place sword units on), or the mouth of the bridge. This may cause the rest of the enemy army to rout, based on different morale-affecting factors.ĥ. You can crush one (or several) weaker enemy units, causing them to rout. Horses are best used smashing into the sides or backs of the enemy formation and chasing down routing units.Ĥ. Cavalry are best for flanking, but it can also be done with missile units who have expended their ammunition (best done in conjunction with cavalry).ģ. Flanking will be your tactical bread and butter. Use terrain to your advantage! Use forests to hide cavalry or light units, and always seek the high ground advantage.Ģ. Some things to remember on the battle map:ġ. Is recommend one of the Roman factions, or even Egypt - its chariots will make mince meat of anyone in the early-mid game, and if you've defeated the Romans by then, no one will pose a threat to you. If you find yourself winning the random battles, you will be more than ready to take on the campaign on easy/medium mode.

This will give you a sense of different factions, and will also help to teach you how to counter different types of units, as well as how to use some of the most basic units of different factions. Once you feel confident, try playing some of the randomized battles. As you become more comfortable, start to up the ante and fight against stronger custom armies. You can also try different geographic settings, like mountains of forests. You will learn the move commands, and basic tactics like flanking. This will help you to begin to understand the battle interface. Build an unbeatable army of fully upgraded elite units! Face off against armies half your size consisting of non-upgraded mook units.
